Finding Ritual In Everyday Life

Updated: Aug 17, 2022

A few months ago, during my first ever Akashic record reading one of the messages that came through was to “find ritual in everyday life.”

I have since spent a lot of time processing this and have found incredible meaning in this message and the process. I started with simply washing my face. An act that I do twice a day often without a thought, but since I began the practice of finding ritual, I am conscious and aware and take my time to enjoy every part of the process. For it is truly a lovely act to wash, dry and apply cream or oil to my face!

It made me realize how much of each day I just plow through without notice or thought to what I am doing. And after much consideration, I discovered that so much of what we do is actually incredibly privileged, like – washing our face, and that finding gratitude is an important part of the process of incorporating ritual into our lives.

One of the things I am most grateful for that the last two years of the pandemic has brought us, is the concept of slowing down, for it has made this ritual practise much more attainable. For in order to really be fully present and to appreciate our day-to-day routines, I believe moving slowly is essential.

“The true secret of happiness lies in taking a genuine interest in all the details of daily life."

- William Morris

There is a certain meaningfulness to moving slowly and finding ritual in day-to-day acts that brings a spiritual essence into every day for me. I now try and wash my dishes with purpose and intention, making it a ritual. My partner and I wash our dishes by hand, and I realize now that this choice is actually rooted in our unconscious desire to keep life simple and find joy in everyday chores.

In the 7 years that I was lucky enough to stay home with my sons I discovered that I enjoy most domestic work. I imagine that had I been working outside of the home those years, domestic chores would have been a struggle to stay on top of and well, a chore. But since I had the privilege and chose to stay home to raise our sons, I had the time and energy and took pride in making our house a home. At that point in my life I had not studied Feng Shui, but I now understand that I was working with energy in my home. Cleaning, organizing and clutter clearing and all other domestic chores are in fact a way of working with energy!

rit·u·al

a religious or solemn ceremony consisting of a series of actions performed according to a prescribed order.

The simple practise of finding ritual in everyday life is a way to nourish our souls by transforming daily practises into meaningful and even spiritual events. In a world where we feel more isolated and alone on our personal journeys I believe rituals create a foundation for our modern spiritual lives. I highly recommend bringing this practice into your life, for what you will perhaps find is that everything we do in our life matters and each and every act has the potential to become a powerful experience of reflection, personal satisfaction and gratitude.
